On Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020, Microsoft will discontinue support, security patches and bug fixes for Windows 7, Server 2008 and Server 2008R2.
On Wednesday, Jan. 15, any PC or laptop that is connected to the campus network and continues to run the Windows 7 operating system and these servers will be noncompliant with the NC State RUL 08.00.14 – System and Software Security Patching Standard and will be removed from the network. Running out-dated and unsupported software risks security breaches and unintended data disclosure and violates NC State Policies, Regulations, and Rules (PRRs) for information technology.
To avoid loss of service:
- Upgrade your system to the latest version of the Windows 10 operating system or other supported operating system as soon as possible.
- Add the system to an approved configuration management system to receive regular patches and updates.
- If your system cannot be upgraded and has a requirement to remain operational, submit an IT Exception Request by Saturday, Nov. 30 to allow adequate processing time.
- On the IT Exception Request form, select “Exception – Security Control Compliance” as the Exception Type and complete all required information.
- When completing Step 3, select “Operating System no longer receiving security patches (End of Life, aka EOL)” as the security standard to request an exception.
Security and Compliance will review the request and assist you with moving the systems to a secure network with limited access. Some solutions may incur a cost depending on your situation.
