In the article, "Creating supportive, engaging work environment helps fight employee burnout," author Joe Santana describes the work of two leading researchers in the area of workplace burnout - Drs. Christina Maslach and Michael Leiter. According to the researchers, there are six reasons for employee disengagement and burnout: work overload, lacking a sense of control, insufficient rewards relative to the demand, breakdown or lack of a sense of community in the workplace, conflict of values or seeing work as meaningless, and absence of fairness.
