Installing Trend Micro OfficeScan for Microsoft Windows Vista
CAUTION: The installation process for this program has four stages. These stages must be completed in the order given below. To avoid damage to your computer system, it is also crucial that you finish all the steps in one stage before moving to the next.
Installation Process
- Updating your operating system
- Uninstalling existing antivirus and anti-spyware/malware programs
- OPTIONAL - Cleaning up after uninstalling Symantec programs
- Installing Trend Micro OfficeScan for Windows
I. Updating your operating system
Make sure that you have installed the latest Windows updates from Microsoft Windows Update:

II. Uninstalling existing antivirus and anti-spyware/malware programs
Before you can install Trend Micro OfficeScan, you must uninstall all of the following products that are present on your computer:
- All Symantec or Norton antivirus programs provided by NC State

III. OPTIONAL - Cleaning up after uninstalling Symantec programs
- If you are having trouble uninstalling your Symantec antivirus product, using a cleanup utility may help.

- If you uninstalled Symantec AntiVirus or Symantec Endpoint Protection distributed by NC State:
Use our instructions for Using the CleanWipe Antivirus Removal Utility. - If you uninstalled a consumer version Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security or Norton 360 product (not the Corporate Edition distributed by NC State):

IV. Installing Trend Micro OfficeScan for Windows
- Be sure that you are an administrator for the computer on which you will be installing this program. [How can I tell if I'm an administrator?]
- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Accept the NCSU download EULA and download Trend Micro OfficeScan 8:

Note: You will need to log in with your Unity ID and password.
- When your download is finished, close any programs currently running on your computer.
- Locate your installer file, called tmos.msi, and double-click it.

- You will receive a Security Warning from Microsoft stating that the publisher cannot be verified. Click Run.
- After a few moments, the Trend Micro OfficeScan Install Wizard will appear. Click the Next button to continue.

- A few moments after installation begins, Vista's User Access Control will ask for permission to proceed. Click Allow.
- The installer will begin installing OfficeScan on your computer. The process will take a few moments to complete. During the installation, you may see pop-up errors indicating that you do not have antivirus software installed or that your antivirus software isn't running. These errors are normal during installation, and can be ignored.

- When the install is complete, click Finish.
- Restart your computer.
- When your computer finishes retstarting, it may take OfficeScan several moments to fully load and become ready. During this time, it may display errors that it is "offline" or not running. These errors will clear after a few moments.
