How to Deal With a Virus Caught by OfficeScan

What do you do if Trend Micro OfficeScan detects a virus on your computer?  First, do not panic!  If OfficeScan actually detected the virus, it means that the viral infection has likely been stopped before any damage could take place.

OfficeScan will display an alert when it detects a virus, similar to this:

OfficeScan notifying user of a virus being found

This alert lets you know that OfficeScan took action to prevent the infection from spreading.  It contains information about the date/time the infection was found, the actual virus/malware that was found, the file that was infected, and the resulting action that OfficeScan took to deal with the situation.

In most cases, you will see in the Result column that the virus was either Quarantined or Cleaned, meaning that the infected file is no longer a threat to your computer.

  • Cleaned: If OfficeScan decided to clean the file, then the file is now free of the virus, and you can use it normally.
  • Quarantined: If OfficeScan decided to quarantine the infected file, it will place the file in a special location on your computer's hard drive: C:\TMQuarantine.  You can open this folder on your own and delete the file if you wish.

In some cases, OfficeScan will be unable to clean or quarantine an infected file, usually because it is in use.  Some viruses and spyware/adware programs actively run on your computer, meaning that they require special treatment to be removed.

If OfficeScan is unable to repair or remove the infected file, use our steps for what to do when your computer has a virus.
