CAUTION: The steps in this process will leave you without antivirus protection.

There are several ways to uninstall Symantec AntiVirus from Mac OS X.  They are listed here, ordered by effectiveness at cleaning Symantec products from your computer:

• NCSU's specialized SymantecUninstaller utility (recommended for persons still at NCSU)
• Symantec's RemoveSymantecMacFiles utility (recommended for non-NCSU persons)
  
• Symantec's Symantec Uninstaller GUI utility

NCSU's specialized SymantecUninstaller utility

1. Open your web browser.
2. Download NCSU's specialized version of the Symantec Uninstaller utility:
   http://www.ncsu.edu/antivirus/files/SymantecUninstaller.pkg.zip
3. Close your web browser and any other open applications.
4. Locate and open the icon titled SymantecUninstaller.pkg.zip.
   
5. Double-click the SymantecUninstaller.pkg icon.
   
6. The Install SymantecUninstaller window will appear.  Because this is a special NCSU-created application, it will look similar to other application install wizards.  It will not actually install anything on your computer.
   
7. Follow the prompts in the Symantec Uninstaller program to remove all Symantec products.
8. The uninstallation process may take several moment to finish.  When process is complete, you will receive a confirmation message.
9. In order to complete the uninstall, you must restart your computer.  Press the Restart button, and the Symantec Uninstaller will reboot your computer automatically.

Symantec's RemoveSymantecMacFiles utility

For persons no longer affiliated with NC State, or users finding that the NCSU-provided SymantecUninstaller utility is not working correctly, Symantec provides an alternate program for removing Symantec AntiVirus from your Mac:

This utility is updated regularly by Symantec, and is effective at removing Symantec applications installed on Mac OS X.
