Using Symantec Cleanwipe
CAUTION: The steps in this process will leave you without antivirus protection.
CleanWipe is an antivirus removal and cleanup utility from Symantec Corporation (learn more). These are instructions for using CleanWipe to clean up after uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus or Symantec Endpoint Protection from Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003.
- Download CleanWipe.exe:

Note: You will need to log in with your Unity ID and password. - Reboot your computer into Safe Mode (How do I boot into Safe Mode?).
- Your computer will load Windows' Safe Mode. Log in if necessary.
- When you login, you will see a window explaining the purpose of Safe Mode. Close it to continue.
- When your desktop appears, open the CleanWipe utility:
- Windows Vista users: right-click on the CleanWipe.exe icon. When the menu appears, select Run as administrator.
- Windows XP, 2000, Server 2003 users: double-click on the CleanWipe.exe icon.
- When the CleanWipe file extract window opens, click Start. The program files will be put into a temporary location on your hard drive.
- The CleanWipe utility will start automatically. You will see an information window appear. Click Yes to continue.

- CleanWipe will display a window with information about what it will do on your computer. Click OK to continue.
- The CleanWipe utility will search your computer for installed versions of Symantec products. It will show a series of windows, asking to uninstall each product that it locates. Click Yes in each window to allow CleanWipe to remove what it finds.
- One window will ask if you wish for CleanWipe to perform a Detailed MSI Product Code Search. We recommend allowing CleanWipe to perform this search, even though CleanWipe recommends against it.
- At the end of the questions, CleanWipe will display a summary of your choices. Press OK to begin the uninstall.

- CleanWipe will take some time to remove the Symantec products it found. The length of this process will depend on the thoroughness of the uninstallation, and the speed of your computer. Do not interrupt the process or reboot your computer while CleanWipe is working. You will see a message when CleanWipe is finished.
- When CleanWipe closes, reboot your computer normally (not into Safe Mode).
If you have problems while performing these steps, contact the NC State Help Desk for assistance.
