Blog less frequently

OK, it’s the second week of the New Year and I haven’t blogged much.  I am finding Twitter much more convenient so I am posting more there.  I had a very restful vacation (actually, my computer blue screened so I could not do any work for a week).

Getting back, things were slow for the first week – which was a nice way to ease back into work.  The end of the year was hectic – we had to submit a very high level projection for 3-5-7% budget cuts for next fiscal year (of state appropriated funds) by Jan 5.  This was a planning exercise for reporting to GA so they could use it for discussions to all parties on the impact to Higher Ed.  The New Year has brought a much more careful and thoughtful planning process.

Yesterday there was a half day retreat with the University Council to discuss process for planning potential budget reductions for next year.  Nothing is set or decided especially since there is no real number on what the state shortfall will be until taxes are collected (April).  Over 54% of the state budget comes from individual income taxes.  Expect many more meetings, discussions and ideas to be communicated before any decisions are made.
