In the Sept. 1 News & Observer article, "State campuses to cut 900 jobs," it was stated: "Administrative costs on university campuses have come under scrutiny lately. Responding to an Aug. 17 News & Observer report on the swelling of administrative ranks within the UNC system, (Erskine) Bowles directed the chancellors of the state's public universities to focus on cuts to administration." The UNC System is expected to eliminate 900 administrative positions this year.

University officials released on May 28 a memo regarding continued budget planning for fiscal year 2009-2010. According to the memo, current estimates of the 2009-10 state revenue shortfall are now ranging up to 20%. The memo initiated a process to develop a set of options for cuts of up to 18% in state general fund appropriations to the university.
