For the 2012-2013 academic year, OIT has developed the following minimum recommendations, which should be met or exceeded by a computer you already own and plan to use at NC State.  If your existing computer can run current software and use the campus network, then you may be able to use it for a year or so and postpone buying a new one until you learn more about what you'll need.
