Welcome to Computing@NC State
You’re at a new place, with lots of freedom, new responsibilities, new challenges, new and old friends, and plenty of opportunities. Welcome to NC State, an experience that will have a lasting effect on your life and career!
IThe Office of Information Technology (OIT) is ready to help you (and faculty and staff) incorporate information technology into your university experience. While here at NC State, you will come into contact with new, innovative, and exciting uses of technology in learning and social situations, some of which may be stressful. I want you to know that the university IT team provides a variety of resources for you - Help Desk, wireless networking, computer labs, Google Apps, mobile, and more.
The two biggest IT concerns you will encounter are: IT security and privacy, so here are my three golden rules for protecting yourself:
- NEVER give your password to ANYONE! Not the Help Desk, not friends, not parents, not anyone -- especially not in an email. [See article on phishing, page 12.]
- NEVER put anything in an email, in a text message, or on Facebook that you would not put on the front page of a newspaper.
- Do not illegally download or share any copyrighted material such as music, books and videos. Music publishers and movie companies are monitoring the Internet and have been initiating lawsuits. [See articles on downloading (page 7) and copyright infringement (page 15).]
Remember that IT security and your IT privacy are under your control, so don’t be a victim. Let OIT help you be successful at NC State.
Have a great and successful experience and… Go Wolfpack!
Marc Hoit
Vice Chancellor for Information Technology
