Authenticated SMTP
If you want to send email from off campus using the on-campus outgoing email server (smtp.ncsu.edu), then you will need authenticated SMTP. You can use this service either from your home or while you are traveling, provided that your email client supports it and you've set it up. Links to setup instructions are provided below. Then all you'll need to use the service are your Unity ID and password.
NOTE: NC State has replaced Symantec AntiVirus v 9.x for Windows on campus with Trend Micro OfficeScan, which you should download and install on your computer as soon as possible if you haven't already. Visit NC State Antivirus Resources for details. However, if you still have the Symantec version (not supported after June 22, 2009), you will need to disable its Internet E-mail Auto-Protect feature in order to use authenticated SMTP. Here's how:
- Double-click on the gold shield icon in your system tray (bottom right corner of the screen) to open the Symantec control console.
- From the menu tree on the left side, select Configure.
- On the right side, select Internet E-mail Auto-Protect.
- Uncheck the box labeled Enable Internet E-mail Auto-Protect. Be sure to leave this box unchecked as long as you are using the Authenticated SMTP service.
- Select OK.
