Configuring Outlook 2007 to connect to Gmail

  1. Make sure you have already synced your password using the procedure described under Syncing your Unity passwordThis link will open in a new window. If you don't do this first, your connection still won't work even after completing the following steps.
  2. Open Outlook.
  3. For new setups, select Do not upgrade.
  4. Select Yes.
  5. For Display name, enter your full NC State email address UnityID@ncsu.edu [Note: This must be the fully-qualified address, so be sure to include the @ncsu.edu in it.]
  6. For Password, enter your Unity password.
  7. Check Manually configure server settings or additional server types.
  8. Select Internet Email.
  9. For Name, Senter your full NC State e-mail address UnityID@ncsu.edu [Note: This must be the fully-qualified address, so be sure to include the @ncsu.edu in it.]
  10. For Account Type, select IMAP from the drop-down menu.
  11. For Incoming server name, enter imap.gmail.com.
  12. For Outgoing server name, enter smtp.gmail.com.
  13. For User name, enter your full NC State email address UnityID@ncsu.edu [Note: This must be the fully-qualified address, so be sure to include the @ncsu.edu in it.]
  14. Select Next.
  15. In the Tools menu, select Options, then Mail Setup.
  16. For E-mail Accounts, select E-mail Accounts.
  17. Select an account, and above the list of accounts, select Change.
  18. Select More Settings, then select the Advanced tab.
  19. For the Incoming Server, use Port 993 and select Must use SSL encryption.
  20. For the Outgoing Server, use Port 587 and select TLS encryption.
  21. Select the Outgoing Server tab and select My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
  22. Click OK, then Next, then Close, then OK.
  23. Check NC State's recommended settings, and adjust your settings as needed. [Note: NC State recommended settings should take precedence over any that you might see in Google recommended settings in the next step.]
  24. Check Google's recommended client settings for any other settings.
