Winter 2009 Update: What's happening in OIT?

From the Directors provides a brief overview of recent projects in the division's eight units.

  • Eric Sills – Advanced Computing
    The virtual computing lab (VCL) passed a couple of milestones in October with total reservations passing 500,000, and total hours used passing 1 million. The busiest single day for VCL to date was Thursday, Oct.15 with 2,559 reservations and about 525 concurrently used blade servers. (It is common for Thursdays to be peak use days, because, apparently, many homework assignments are due on Fridays). Read more!

  • Karen Horne – Business Services
    The first quarter of the fiscal year has closed, and we are off to a better start for the second quarter. I’m glad to say most budget restrictions have lifted and the weekly reporting of expenditures has been ceased. Now we can concentrate on OIT’s budget and start making plans for what projects we can fund this fiscal year.

  • Greg Sparks – Communication Technologies
    The past few months have certainly been busy as we have worked on a multitude of projects, brought closure to others and begun preparations for our return to the Avent Ferry Technology Center. That’s right, we have a new name to go with our (mostly) new building. Read more!

  • Gwen Halzehurst – Enterprise Application Services
    As we wind down the calendar year in EAS, we’re ramping up efforts on a number of major initiatives. Most visible of these is our partnership with Carolina to upgrade our Financial and HR systems to version 9.1 and implement version 9.1 of both systems for Carolina. Read more!

  • Stan North Martin – Outreach, Communications and Consulting 
    Fall semesters always seem to go by quickly, and this one is no exception. Like every unit in OIT, the Outreach, Communications and Consulting staff have been involved in a host of projects and activities, along with all of the things we do to provide ongoing service to the campus community and our OIT colleagues. Read more!

  • Mardecia Bell – Security & Compliance
    What’s happening in Security & Compliance? S&C recently coordinated OIT's third annual Computer Security Day. It was a huge success! More than 175 people attended three presentation tracks to learn more about Cybersecurity Self Defense.

  • Susan West Klein – Technology Support Services
    A New Voice for the Help Desk! There are many ways for people at NC State to send questions and help requests to the NC State Help Desk. Requests come in via e-mail, the Web and through automated processes, but the lifeblood of the Help Desk is still the telephone. Over the years, the Help Desk has used a variety of telephone-based tools and systems to help route callers to consultants, and we are now preparing for another big transition to a new, hosted call distribution service from Angel.com.
