Gov. Beverly Perdue is encouraging all state employees to participate in United We Serve, a national effort of President Obama "to engage more Americans in serving their communities this summer".
State employees can use their community service leave to participate in area volunteer opportunities available on the SERVE.gov Web site.

In the article, "Creating supportive, engaging work environment helps fight employee burnout," author Joe Santana describes the work of two leading researchers in the area of workplace burnout - Drs. Christina Maslach and Michael Leiter. According to the researchers, there are six reasons for employee disengagement and burnout: work overload, lacking a sense of control, insufficient rewards relative to the demand, breakdown or lack of a sense of community in the workplace, conflict of values or seeing work as meaningless, and absence of fairness.
The researchers offer the following tips to managers and organizations to address the causes of disengagement and burnout. Based on your experience in OIT, in which of the areas below do you believe we are performing well?
