Welcome to Information for Researchers

Networking capacity for research

  • Campus data network - Researchers in all fields of study at NC State have access to the university’s high-capacity, highly-available Gigabit Ethernet network.
  • High-performance research network and Internet connectivity - NC State is connected to the Internet 2 and National Lamda Rail research and education networks, peer institutions and the commodity Internet through the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN) infrastructure at 1 gigabit/second.

High-performance computing (HPC) capacity and service

  • HPC services - Launched in 2003 after the abrupt close of the North Carolina Supercomputing Center, OIT’s growing HPC services now include distributed memory computing, shared memory computing, data storage, a suite of applications, training, consulting and collaboration on computational issues.
  • HPC Faculty Partner Program - This innovative program maximizes the use of HPC resources and support for participating faculty partners and the wider NC State community.
  • Research Computing Committee - Advises on policies and priorities for research computing services offered by OIT; assists with aligning services with NC State's strategic priorities; helps to coordinate with other research computing services within the university as well as broader regional and national resources.

Software services

  • Software on HPC systemsIncludes specialized software for computational science research projects; training and consultation available from expert staff.
  • Software licensing program - OIT supports an aggressive program to minimize software costs and maximize availability for the campus as a whole.
  • SAS software and consulting - Available thanks to a grant program from SAS Institute.

Virtual Computing Lab services

  • Virtual Computing Lab (VCL) - Provides easy-to-use web-based access to the university’s high-performance computing systems as well as high-end applications.

Consulting and support

  • In addition to providing technology infrastructure and services to support research at NC State, OIT collaborates with research projects and grants across campus. For more information or assistance, contact Dr. Eric Sills, asst. vice provost for Research Computing (eric_sills@ncsu.edu) or Stan North Martin (stan_martin@ncsu.edu), director of Outreach, Communications and Consulting.
