Date: August 2009

Accomplishment: Implementation team is meeting regularly, focusing on planning surrounding implementation process. Several work groups are focusing on specific areas of the planning. Communication plan is well underway.

Issues: Need agreement in place to test message delivery and security features (Postini). Negotiations ongoing with Google to complete contract for both Google Apps and Postini services. Key decision points need to be made before broader implementation plan can be crafted.

Next steps: Make final decisions on key implementation strategies, structure initial pilot testing of Postini services with g-pilot.ncsu.edu domain, plan production pilot procedures.


Date: April 2009

Accomplishment: Dr. Hoit gives go-ahead for campus to begin contract negotions with Google Inc. to provide Google Apps Education Edition services for all students at NC State.

Issues: Google Inc.'s current standard contract for the free Google Apps Education Edition service is problematic in terms of North Carolina and NC State legal requirements.

Next steps: The NC State Office of Legal Affairs in cooperation with UNC-GA work with Google Inc. to reach an agreement.

Accomplishment: Student E-mail Task Force completes report and submits recommendations  to Dr. Hoit.

Issues: Recommendation to transition NC State student e-mail to Google Apps Education Edition

Next steps: Dr. Hoit to seek addtional input from university's executive team, other campus stakeholders and advisors

Accomplishment: Vice Chancellor for IT, Dr. Marc Hoit announces formation of Student E-mail Task Force.

Issues: Current services are reliable and work for official university communication, but they are not meeting student needs or expectations for more sophisticated e-mail and collaboration tools; campus has UNC-GA mandate to improve efficiency and effectiveness of IT services.

Next steps: Task Force to begin research and evaluation process.
