Listening to Messages by Phone

Instead of using the detailed voice mail directions on this page, you may prefer to use the condensed directions in the Quick Guide to Voice Mail (PDF).  (To listen to your old voice messages in the Octel system, see Accessing Your Old Voice Mail.)

New Messages

  1. Keep the following shortcuts in mind while you are working with your messages:
    • * - Cancel an action or skip back to the beginning of the menu you are in.
    • * then * - Exit the voice mail system.
    • 0 - Help.
  2. Go to Accessing Your Voice Mail, follow the procedure for your specific location (your campus phone, another campus phone, or off campus), and then return to this page.
  3. When you are at the main menu, press 1.
  4. While the message is playing, press buttons as follows:
    • Select a message
      • 1 - Replay message from the beginning.
      • 1 then 2 - Play a message by sequential number.
      • 1 then 4 - Play previous message.
      • 1 then 6 - Play next message.
      • 5 - Play messages properties.
      • 6 - Mark message as new (unplayed).
    • Adjust message speed
      • 2 - Pause/Resume
      • 3 - Fast forward a few seconds.
      • 3 then 3 - Fast forward to end.
      • 4 - Slow playback
      • 4 then 4 - Slower playback
      • 6 - Fast playback
      • 6 then 6 - Faster playback
    • Adjust message volume
      • 7 - Decrease volume
      • 8 - Normal volume
      • 9 - Increase volume
  5. After the message stops playing, press buttons as follows:
    • Navigate
      • 1 - Skip back a few seconds
      • 4 - Replay from the beginning
      • # - Play next message
      • 5 - Get message properties
    • Respond
      • 8 - Reply
      • 8 then 2 - Reply to all
      • 8 then 8 - Call the sender.
    • Dispose
      • 6 - Forward the message
      • 7 - Delete the message
      • 9 - Save as heard
      • # then # - Save or Restore as new
  6. When you have finished listening to new messages and managing them, you can press ** to exit the system

Saved and Deleted Messages

  1. Keep the following shortcuts in mind as you work with your messages:
    • * - Cancel an action or skip back to the beginning of the menu you are in.
    • * then * - Exit the voice mail system.
    • 0 - Help.
  2. If you have not already done so, go to Accessing Your Voice Mail, follow the procedure for your specific location (your campus phone, another campus phone, or off campus), and then return to this page.
  3. When you are at the main menu, press 3.
  4. Choose the old messages you want to listen to as follows:
    • For Saved messages, press 1.
    • For Deleted messages, press 2.
  5. Follow the instructions for listening to new messages (above) beginning with Step 4.
