Infrastructure & Provisioning
The Infrastructure team works "above the floor tile and below the application."
Data Center Provisioning & Platform management
Provisioning works with the ISO operations group to do data center management. Server deployment, redeployment and decommissioning is done in conjunction with ISO-Prov and ISO-Operations. Physical servers may take 3 weeks from request to customer handoff once received. Workflows are designed to handle all the needed steps for the rollout or removal of data center servers. For more information about data center deployment, send email to oit_iso_prov@help.ncsu.edu.
Block and NAS storage
Provisioning maintains the SAN which provides block level storage for OIT servers as well as customers who would like to have SAN performance and reliability. Block storage is available in capacity optimized or I/O optimized offerings. and included backup and recovery to tape. Provisioning also maintains the NAS infrastructure for CIFS and NFS file shares within OIT. This space is also available in bulk for customers who have the ability to manage their shares, permissions and desktop support. Bulk NAS storage includes backup and recovery to tape. For customers who need assistance with that process, the same resources are available as part of a TSS managed desktop offering. Details available at Storage Services page.
For more information about data storage needs, send email to oit_iso_prov@help.ncsu.edu.
Data Protection
Avamar is a backup and recovery product that is used for vmware backups as well as certain OIT windows servers. It uses a client installed the virtual machine or inside the physical machine. At this time it is used for fairly generic windows hosts but isn’t appropriate for DB servers or clusters.
Centerra is an archival storage technology designed for specific legal retention requirements or for low cost long term storage. It is used as a tier in the long term hierarchical storage strategy but is not available as a separate service at this time.
NetBackup The current netbackup environment is 6.55. OIT data is backed up to VTL disks which emulate tape and then cloned to MCNC. Data is kept in accords with the OIT data retention policy (currently in draft format.)
For more information about data recovery needs, send email to oit_iso_prov@help.ncsu.edu
VMware infrastructure service
OIT and ITECS have partnered to create a combined VMware infrastructure service for IT support groups on campus. Using VMware virtualization, both OIT and ITECS have realized significant cost savings through smaller data center and server room foot prints, and reduced hardware management time. Details available at VMware infrastructure service page.
Legacy administrative Solaris environments.
