Your Unity ID

Each person affiliated with NC State University is assigned a Unity ID and password.  You may also see this ID referred to as a Unity username, user id, or login id.

  • New students receive their Unity IDs and initial (default) passwords upon acceptance at NC State but no later than the end of New Student Orientation.  New undergraduate students can also find their Unity IDs in the WolfPAW system under Application Status.
NOTE: Your Unity ID and password are NOT the same as your WolfPAW login credentials.
  • New faculty and staff members receive their Unity IDs and initial (default) passwords when they are hired.
  • You can also find out your Unity ID by contacting the NC State Help Desk at 515-HELP(4357).

Unity ID vs. Campus ID

  • Your Unity ID has 8 or fewer characters, usually all letters.
This is what you use to log in to secure Web sites, access OIT services and other university IT resources.
  • Your Campus ID is the 9-digit number after the letters "NCSU" on your All Campus Card.
This is also called Student ID Number, Staff ID Number, and Peoplesoft ID Number.

Unity ID Creation

Your Unity ID is automatically generated from your name in a two-step procedure:

  1. A string of letters is created using the initials of your first and middle names and the first six letters of your last name, all in lower case.
    Examples:
George William Abernathy would have the Unity ID of gwaberna.
Mary Jones Smith's ID would be mjsmith.
  2. If this string matches an ID that has been created for someone else, the last letter will be replaced with or followed by a numeral.
    Example:
Melissa Jane Smith's ID was created after that of Mary Jones Smith in the example above, so her ID would be mjsmith2.

NOTE: It is not possible to predict with certainty what your Unity ID will be.  If you need to know it, avoid frustration and contact the NC State Help Desk.
