70% of NC State employees complete Data Security Training

Since NC State launched its annual mandatory Data Security Training in early February, about 70% of 26,072 university employees successfully completed the training within the 60-day deadline. Impacted employees include faculty, staff, student employees, and no-pay employees, including retirees.

Developed by OIT and campus affiliates, the training module focuses on cybersecurity awareness topics critical to the university, such as phishing, two-factor authentication (2FA) and mobile device security.

The Data Security Training provides basic security knowledge so that employees don’t fall prey to cyber threats like the recent gift card spear phishing attacks. It is one of many IT resources that can help reduce human error — the leading cause of compromised systems.

Non Compliance and Employee Classification

The top employee classifications for those who have not completed the Data Security Training include:

  • Student workers 1,870
  • Temporary Staff 1,435
  • Unpaid faculty 1,418

If you have NOT successfully completed the training, you should do so immediately.

New employees will have to complete the training within the first 30 days of their employment.

After successfully completing the mandatory Data Security Training, you will receive a certificate of completion via email. You, along with your manager, will receive weekly email reminders until you have completed the training.

Supervisors

Campus supervisors should check and verify their employees’ training status. See A Manager’s Guide to Checking Activity for detailed instructions on viewing training records.
