Google Workspace updates for fall semester

The Google Service Team is taking steps to reduce data storage to comply with Google’s quota requirement by November 2024.

Additional Google Workspace changes that will occur this fall include:

  • Google Photos App
Google Photos app users should transfer photos to another platform before the university removes access. Google Photos is a consumer application that NC State cannot manage, and all content stored in it counts against the university’s storage quota.
  • Google Shared Drives
Only university employees can now create Shared Drives. Shared Drives provide the best practice for employees to create and share content as well as maintain access to university data when another employee leaves. All users, including students, can be members of Shared Drives.
  • Google Storage Exceptions For Students
All Google storage exceptions for students will be removed on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024, and all students will have the default 15 gigabyte quota. Affected students have received notices and they will need to reduce storage usage to create and edit Google files. The student can send and receive emails while the account is over quota.
