January IT Quick Hall Will Spotlight Human-AI Trust
NC State Chief Information Officer Marc Hoit will host the next IT Quick Hall, “Calibrating Trust Between Humans and AI Systems,” on Jan. 22 from 11:30 a.m. to noon.
Hoit will provide a brief update on campus IT news and introduce guest speaker Helen Armstrong, a Graphic & Experience Design professor and the director of the Master of Graphic & Experience Design program at NC State. Her research focuses on digital rights, human-machine teaming and accessible design.
Armstrong authored Graphic Design Theory and Digital Design Theory and co-authored Participate: Designing with User-Generated Content. Her current book, Big Data, Big Design: Why Designers Should Care About Artificial Intelligence, demystifies AI — specifically machine learning — while inspiring designers to harness this technology and establish leadership via thoughtful human-centered design.
Armstrong is a past member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) National Board of Directors, the editorial board of Design and Culture, and a former chair of the AIGA Design Educators Community. NC State named her a University Faculty Scholar in 2018. Her research partners have included IBM, Red Hat, REI, Advance Auto Parts, SAS, Sealed Air, Department of Defense, Fidelity Investments and the Laboratory for Analytic Sciences.
