Swann Named Interim AVC for Research Computing and Data

Dr. Julie Swann has joined the Office of Information Technology (OIT) as the interim assistant vice chancellor for Research Computing and Data (RCD), effective Feb. 28.
During her 12-month term, Swann will help lead efforts to establish and develop the new RCD unit. This unit will focus on improving research computing and storage to support faculty and their research, scholarship and teaching.
“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Swann to the role. OIT and unit IT leaders are working together to support the huge demand for research computing and support, including the AI explosion. Dr. Swann is uniquely qualified to lead the collaborative efforts to focus on faculty needs in order to support their success,” said Marc Hoit, chief information officer and vice chancellor for information technology.

While in this role, Swann will continue serving as head and A. Doug Allison Distinguished Professor of the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. She is a research leader in using mathematical modeling to enable supply chain systems and health care to become more efficient and effective worldwide. She is also an affiliate faculty in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill and served as the 2024 president of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. Prior to joining NC State, Swann was the Harold R. and Mary Anne Nash Professor in the Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). There she co-founded and co-directed the Center for Health and Humanitarian Systems, one of the first interdisciplinary research centers on the school’s campus.
Swann holds doctorate and master’s degrees in industrial engineering and management science from Northwestern University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from Georgia Tech.
