May IT Quick Hall to Highlight Data Revolution in Agriculture Research

A doctoral candidate researches how iron deficiency affects cell differentiation in plants.

NC State Chief Information Officer Marc Hoit will host the next IT Quick Hall on May 28 from 11:30 a.m. to noon.

Hoit will provide a brief update on campus IT news and introduce guest speaker Cranos Williams, the Goodnight Distinguished Professor of Agricultural Analytics at NC State. Williams’ research focuses on understanding biomolecular pathways associated with plant growth, development and adaptation.

Cranos Williams

Williams has dual appointments in the Electrical and Computer Engineering and Plant and Microbial Biology departments. He also serves as platform director of the NC Plant Sciences Initiative’s Data-Driven Plant Sciences research platform and is head of the EnBiSys Research Laboratory.

Williams’ research lab develops methodologies familiar to other areas of electrical and computer engineering — like computational intelligence and system identification — to model and predict the impact that genetic and environmental perturbations have on overall plant response. The results from these works will have direct implications on key challenges associated with engineering plants for efficient biofuel production, increased adaptability to changing environments, and improved defense to biotic and abiotic stresses.

IT Quick Halls will take a break for the summer and return in the fall.
