VPN Installation for Windows

These instructions are for the following Windows versions:

  • Windows 10
  • Windows 8 and 8.1
    NOTE: If you are upgrading to Windows 8.1: Uninstall AnyConnect and then reinstall it after the upgrade is complete.
    NOTE: Currently, Windows 8 and 8.1 are not officially supported with the current version of Cisco VPN AnyConnect client that is automatically pushed to all VPN users.  This will be remedied soon, but in the meantime, you can download an updated client manually.
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows 2007

Installation Options

Choose the installation option that best fits your circumstances.

Automated Installation Option

  • Firefox or Chrome is recommended for ease of installation.
  • This option requires either one of the following:
    • ActiveX
    • Java
  • If you select this option, follow the Instructions for Automated Installation below.

Manual Installation Option

  • Firefox or Chrome is recommended for ease of installation.
  • Choose this option if either of these applies to you:
    • You are using a 64-bit browser.
    • You tried automated installation and it failed.
  • If you select this option, follow these three steps for manual installation:
    1. Download this file: Version 3.1.14018
    2. Double click on the downloaded file to install.
    3. When the installation is complete, go to Using the VPN client (below).

Instructions for Automated Installation

  1. Go to https://vpn.ncsu.edu.
  2. Enter your NC State Unity ID and password.
  3. Press the Login button.


  4. The Cisco AnyConnect VPN will launch, and the install will begin automatically.
  5. This web client requires either ActiveX or Java.
    Before the installer can begin, you may be prompted to download one or both of these programs, depending on your browser.
    If you are prompted, click Install ActiveX Control:


    A window will appear asking if you wish to install the AnyConnect client by Cisco Systems.
    Another window will ask you to verify the application’s digital signature.

  6. Click the Install or Run button to begin the installation.
    Once the client has been installed on your computer, it will automatically be configured for use.
    When configuration is finished, the VPN client will automatically start.


    The appearance of a Connection Established window indicates that you are connected:


    The Cisco AnyConnect client will be added to your Start menu.

Using the VPN client

Connect the VPN client

  1. In the Start menu, click:
    Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client
  2. In the next window, make sure the Ready to connect field says:
  3. Press the Connect button.


  4. In the next window:
    enter your Unity ID and password and press the OK button.


Disconnect the VPN client

  1. In the bottom right of your screen, left-click the upward arrow.
  2. In the icon tray, locate the lock icon.
  3. Right-click on this icon.
  4. From the menu, select Disconnect.
