OIT General Storage Services

Service Overview

OIT provides block (fiber channel) storage and Network Attached Storage (NAS) to campus departments and units for an annual fee.

Block Level storage service is for units that have performance requirements that can not be met by network attached storage service. Block storage is allocated in a one server to one LUN configuration or occasionally as a cluster. It is primarily used to support physical server requirements and OIT virtual hosting services.

It consists of two tiers:

Tier 1 block storage is best suited for highly transitional applications(databases, etc). Tier 1 is for workloads that exceed 500 iOPS at any time.

Tier 2 Block storage is suited for less intensive workloads (file servers, etc) and are below 500 iOPS.

Network Attached Storage (NAS) service consist of SMB and NFS shares and is a replacement for standalone file servers for either Windows and/or Linux/Unix client systems. Virtual file servers are created by OIT and co-managed by OIT and the campus department/unit. On customer request nightly filesystem snapshots are provided and retained for a period of 7 days. Filesystem snapshots are not enabled by default and must be requested.
