Note: This page documents the process underway to implement the NC State IT Strategic Plan that will guide the campus IT community’s vision and decision-making through the end of the decade. The Information Technology Strategic Plan Implementation Steering Team is helping campus craft implementation initiatives to carry out the plan. As these initiatives are developed, they are posted on the IT Strategic Plan Initiatives page. The initiatives are specific projects or ideas that came out of the data gathering process in the development of the plan.

Initiatives Update

Posted August 29, 2018

While the Implementation Steering Team has been focusing primarily on the six first-round initiatives, they recognize there are many other important projects that have taken place or are in process that also support the IT and university-wide strategic goals. The team has been gathering a list of these activities and plans to integrate them into the IT strategic plan site.

The Implementation Steering Team has been meeting regularly to oversee progress on the first round initiatives. This spring the team prepared an Interim Report on the First Rounds Initiatives (PDF).

Pages have been created for each of the IT Strategic Plan first-round initiatives. The pages provide an overview, resource links and status of the work being done on the initiatives.

  1. Develop Cyber Infrastructure Master Plan
  2. Create Service Catalog
  3. Refine IT Governance
  4. Maximize ServiceNow
  5. Optimize Space Utilization with Technology
  6. Transform Data and Analytic Resources

Over the last academic year the first-round of initiatives have taken shape. Progress has varied among the initiatives, due in part to some turnover in leadership for several of the initiatives as well as some other key personnel. Competing time and resource constraints with other projects and priorities have also hampered progress. The Implementation Steering Team continues to meet regularly with the team leaders to receive updates on the initiatives and provide input as appropriate.

More complete updates on each of the initiatives will be provided in the coming days.

Come to the IT Campus Community Meetings!

Posted Sept. 1, 2015

As NC State faculty, staff and students, we use information technology (IT) services and resources every day. With the development of Partners in Innovation: A Strategic Plan for IT at NC State, 2014-2020, the university hopes to make IT an even better enabler of success for education, research, outreach, and business operations.

See how the university’s IT Strategic Plan initiatives impact our research, work or studies during the upcoming Campus Community meetings. While the meetings will provide some background on the IT Strategic Plan, the focus will be on the six first-round initiatives that are getting underway. Plenty of time for questions and answers will also be provided.

The IT Strategic Plan Implementation Steering Team will hold two open forums at:

2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23

University IT Community Event draws nearly 300 NC State IT professionals

Posted July 31, 2015

The first-ever NC State All IT Community Event was a successful gathering today of about half of the 600 people affiliated with IT to learn about the six first-round initiatives of the IT Strategic Plan.

Many people stayed even beyond the official ending time for the informal networking portion of the event.

If you missed the event, you can view the slides from the presentation and the overall agenda.

In addition to the Strategic Plan discussion, a new topic-based IT Community Forum was also announced. More details will be shared in the coming months via IT-related channels, including SysNews, OIT News and the NAG mailing lists.

Planning for University IT Community Event

Posted July 23, 2015

With Phase II of the university IT Strategic Plan nearing completion, it seems a perfect time to exemplify our goal of building a collaborative IT culture (see the Guiding Principles) by joining together for the latest updates.

The campus IT community has been invited to an event on Thursday, July 30, 2-6 p.m., that will feature an update by VC for IT Marc Hoit as well as an update on the IT Strategic Plan. A major portion of the session will include discussion of the first-round initiatives. The event also includes time for informal networking among IT colleagues.

Implementation Steering Team rolls out first-round initiatives

Posted July 17, 2015

In late spring the Implementation Steering Team began sharing with various campus groups the process they had been through over the academic year to review the input, generate a set of initiatives, and then narrow those down to a set of first-round initiatives. Slides are available from one of the more recent presentations.

Information Technology Strategic Plan Implementation Steering Team is formed

Posted Oct. 6, 2014

This spring, NC State adopted its first strategic IT plan — Partners in Innovation: A Strategic Plan for IT at NC State, 2014-2020 — that provides the framework for the campus community to achieve the IT environment necessary to support the university’s mission.

In May, the Information Technology Strategic Plan Implementation Steering Team was formed to begin the planning and execution of the next phase of Partners in Innovation. Chaired by Greg Sparks, director of OIT Communication Technologies, the steering team conducted three initial planning meetings this summer and in late August participated in a facilitated retreat to chart a forward path, dubbed “Plan for the Plan” by some team members. The goal was to develop a unified understanding of the steering team’s mission, objectives and operating philosophies using as a foundation the plan’s six IT Strategic Goals:

The steering team will work with the IT Governance Committees and IT campus units to implement elements of the IT strategic plan. For team updates and meeting notes, see University IT Strategic Planning Documents.
