Transcription Synchronization Service Pilot Project

This service will automatically synchronize a media file (video or audio) with a transcript and produce a file you can use for providing captions. This is currently a pilot project between OIT and DELTA with a limited number of users.

Uploading Files

You must upload the media file along with the transcript to your assigned FTP space. You must use a file naming convention where the media file and the transcript file have the same name, except for the extension of txt appended to the transcript file. For example,

video file name: my_movie.mp4
transcript file name: my_movie.mp4.txt (Note the file name ends with both .mp4 AND .txt)

The transcript file should be plain text and should only contain the actual words spoken in the media file.

You have 1 GB of FTP space.

Processing Time

Once both files are uploaded the service will begin processing your files. In this pilot project, there is no notification when the processing has completed. Simply log back in to your FTP space at a later time to see if your synchronized transcript is present. You may have to refresh your FTP browser to see any updated files. The typical processing time for a file is a 1-to-1 ratio, based on the length of the media file, plus about 15 minutes. For example, a 30 minute file will usually be completed about 45 minutes after uploading it. This duration could be greater at times depending upon the server load.

It is best to upload your transcript file first then your media file. Since media files can take a long time to upload, this will ensure the system will not try to start processing your media file before the transcript file is present.

Removing Files

After you have downloaded your completed caption file, please delete your original files from the FTP space.
