Securing Your iOS Data

This page represents Step Two (of three)

Now that you have secured your device, protect your data by performing all of the following. 


Assess Your Data Security Requirements

See the NC State Endpoint Protection Standard for details regarding any additional security controls you must comply with.


Back Up Your Data

To prevent the loss of any data stored on your device, schedule an appointment with yourself to back up all data regularly, for example, once a day. Consider using multiple backup mechanisms. If you travel, take with you a portable backup device (carried separately and similarly secured).

To back up your data to iCloud

Choose one or more of the following ways to perform this procedure:

Search the Settings:  iCloud 

Navigate and tap:  Settings > (Your Name) > iCloud > iCloud Backup

To back up your data to your computer or laptop

  1. Use a Lightning to USB cable to connect your iOS device to a computer or laptop. 
  1. If a message asks for your device passcode or to Trust This Computer, follow the onscreen steps.
  1. Select your iOS device when it appears in Finder.
  2. Select the box called Encrypt [device] backup.
  1. Encrypting your backup will save your Health and Activity data stored on your iOS device.  
  1. Create a memorable password.
  2. Click Back Up Now.

Protect Your Password

  1. Use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)  2FA will protect your accounts from being accessed by anyone other than you.
  2. Use iCloud Keychain — If you need to store passwords on your device record them with this secure password manager. 

To use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Choose one or more of the following ways to perform this procedure:

Navigate:  Settings > (Your Name) > Password & Security > Turn On Two-Factor Authentication

To use iCloud Keychain

Choose one or more of the following ways to perform this procedure:

Navigate:  Settings > (Your Name) > iCloud > Keychain
