Optical Mark Reading

The Optical Mark Reading (OMR) Services group supports nearly all of the university’s Scantron (bubble sheet) testing, exams and evaluations.

Eligibility for OMR services

A university ID is required to use this service, which is for NC State faculty, staff and graduate students as well as North Carolina state agencies and other educational institutions.

OMR services available

  • Exam and quiz scoring
    Academic work is given highest priority. Faculty and staff who use this service should plan accordingly for high volume periods such as midterm and final exams. Turn-around time is two business days in most cases.
  • Faculty and course evaluations
    Turn-around time averages 3-5 days.
  • Surveys
    Turn-around time averages 5-7 days, depending on workload and survey complexity, and may be longer for customized work.

Service Cost

Cost is based on the machine time required for processing. The machine use rate is $45.00 per hour (minimum 15 minutes).

  • Faculty and course evaluations:
    For NC State clients, paid for by the Office of the Provost
  • Surveys:
    Paid for by the department, agency or individual client.

Obtaining OMR Scantron forms

  • Scantron forms (bubble sheets) used for exams and other testing are custom forms for the university.
  • They are available at the NC State Bookstores.

Obtaining assistance with OMR Scantron forms

  • The Scantron forms are designed to work on the Pearson/NCS© OpScan scanners with customized software.
  • If you have general OMR questions or you are administering these Scantron forms for the first time, contact op-scanning@ncsu.edu or 919.515.5472 for advice.
