Optical Mark Reading

The Optical Mark Reading (OMR) Services group supports nearly all of the university’s Scantron (bubble sheet) testing, exams and evaluations.

Eligibility for OMR services

  • A university ID is required.
  • OMR services are available to:
    • NC State graduate students, faculty and staff
    • Other educational institutions
    • North Carolina state agencies

OMR services available

  • Exam and quiz scoring
    • Academic work has highest priority.
    • Plan accordingly for high volume periods; e.g., midterms, final exams.
    • Turn-around time is usually two business days.
  • Faculty and course evaluations
    • Turn-around time averages 3-5 days.
  • Surveys
    • Turn-around time averages 5-7 days,
      depending on workload and survey complexity.
    • Customized work may take longer.

Service Cost

  • Based on scanner processing time
  • $45.00 per hour (minimum 15 minutes)
  • Exam and quiz scoring
    For NC State clients, paid by the Office of the Provost
  • Faculty and course evaluations
    For NC State clients, paid by the Office of the Provost
  • Surveys
    Paid by the department, agency or individual client.

OMR Scantron form processing

For completed testing, exam or evaluation forms:

  1. Print the Optical Mark Reading Request Form and fill it out.
  2. Take your completed request form, university ID and Scantron forms, to:
    Room 124
    Hillsborough Building
    2620 Hillsborough St.

Scanning output

If desired, your output can be emailed to you in the file format you specify on the request form (.CSV or .SDF), which can be opened in Google Sheets or Excel.
