Google Cloud Print – Instructions

Contents

Introduction

These instructions cover uploading a PDF file to Cloud Print as well as printing a file directly from Google Drive. They do not cover Chrome OS and mobile devices.  IMPORTANT:  All Cloud Print jobs need to be approved within 10 minutes after they have been submitted.  See Approving your submitted print job for more details.

Login requirement

To print to a WolfPrint printer through Cloud Print, you must be logged in to Google with your unityID@ncsu.edu G Suite account.

Internet Explorer errors

We have found that errors occur when trying to use Google Cloud Print from some versions of Internet Explorer.  If you experience any issues, please try a different browser.

Email address issue

If your preferred email address, as published in the campus directory, is not your unityid@ncsu.edu address then the first time you print you will get an email asking you to log in to PaperCut and confirm your email address.  We are working to correct this issue so that this login step will not be required.

Choosing the correct print icon

IMPORTANT:  When printing a document from Google Drive in your web browser (including Google Chrome), use only the print icon that is on the Google Drive web page to get access to Cloud Print.

If you click on a print icon or select from a menu in the browser window, you will NOT have access to the Cloud Print printers. Instead, you are likely to print the entire page from your operating system’s print window or the full web page displaying that document, and you may not get just the document.

Basic Cloud Print (PDF upload)

PDF Upload to Google Cloud Print printers is supported in any web browser.  Within WolfPrint, only the FollowMe print queues are available through Google Cloud Print.  For details, see WolfPrint FollowMe Printing.  To upload a PDF to Google Cloud Print and print with a WolfPrint printer:

  1. Make sure you are logged in to Google Drive with your unityid@ncsu.edu Gmail address.
  2. Go to the Google Cloud Print management page:
    https://www.google.com/cloudprint.

These should appear as Owned by WolfPrint Printers.

  9. Click on the Print button.
  10. Once your print job has been submitted, follow the instructions below on Approving your submitted print job.

Printing Google file formats from any browser

Files created in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drawings can be printed from any browser directly from the Google Drive page.  To print these types of files:

  1. Make sure you are logged in to Google Drive with your unityid@ncsu.edu Gmail address.
  2. Open the file or, if you have the Google Chrome Sync application, opening the file from there should launch your default web browser.
  3. From the Google Drive file menu, select Print.
(Alternatively, for a Google Doc or Sheet, you can click on the print icon in the document’s menu bar.)
  4. Check the destination.  You can change it to any Cloud Print printer that is available to your NC State Google account.
  5. Click on the Change button and select one of the WolfPrint FollowMe Printers.
These are listed under the Google Cloud Print section and possibly under Recent Destinations, if you have printed to them recently.
  6. In the Options list, select whether you want to print Two Sided (Duplex).
  7. Click on the Print button.
  8. IMPORTANT: Once your print job has been submitted, follow the instructions for Approving your submitted print job.

NOTE: You will need to convert a non-Google file format to PDF (if not already PDF) and download it before you can print. Here’s how:

  1. From your Google Drive, open the file.
From the tool bar at the top:

    • For PDF files: select the download icon.
    • For all other file formats: select the print icon.
  2. A PDF version of the file will open in a new window or tab, and a print dialog box will also open.
  3. Cancel the print dialog box.
  4. At the top right of the new window that contains the PDF, click the download icon.
  5. Once the PDF has finished downloading, follow the above instructions for Basic Cloud Print (PDF upload).

Approving your submitted print job

After your job is submitted, you will have 10 minutes to approve it.  Here’s how:

  1. Log in to the PaperCut web client.
  2. Shortly afterward, you should get a notification in the web client window regarding your print job.
  3. Select whether to print from:
    • a shared account (if you have access to one) or
    • your personal account.
  4. Approve the job.
NOTE: If you don’t get that notification from the PaperCut web client, then check your email.  There is currently an issue that requires some users, when they use Cloud Print for the first time, to confirm their NC State Gmail address and link it to their account.  If this happens in your case, you will get an email notification from WolfPrint.
