Plan Now for Windows 10 End of Support
Note: This article was originally published Sept. 12, 2024. It was updated on Sept. 24, 2024.
To ensure a secure and supported Windows environment, systems running Windows 10 must be upgraded to Windows 11 by Friday, July 25, 2025. Due to Windows 11 hardware requirements, some devices will need to be replaced.
The Windows 10 operating system will reach the end of support on Oct. 14, 2025. End of support means Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support. The upgrade to Windows 11 is required in order to comply with the university’s Endpoint Protection Standard.
Colleges and departments can upgrade eligible devices now. If a device cannot be upgraded, an exception must be requested by submitting the IT exception request form. In addition, one of the following will be required:
- The college or department must enroll in Microsoft’s Extended Security Update program for a yearly fee. To purchase, email software@ncsu.edu and include the number of licenses needed.
- The device must be moved to an isolated network.
Your local IT has been notified about these upcoming changes and should be able to provide a list of affected devices and answer questions.
