Revised Regulation Clarifies Use of Campus IT Resources
Revisions to REG 08.00.02, formerly known as the Computer Use Regulation, were approved by the chancellor in December. The retitled Use of IT Resources Regulation was revised to provide clarity on issues like data security, privacy and monitoring.
This regulation applies to anyone with access to university IT resources, including all students, faculty and staff, as well as third-party entities such as contractors, visitors and affiliates.
IT resources is a comprehensive term that covers all hardware, software and content used for university purposes, regardless of whether it is owned by the university, an individual or a third party. This includes devices, networks, applications and data.
In addition to restructuring and streamlining the language, changes to the regulation include:
- Account Holder Responsibilities
- A new section was added that details a user’s responsibility to protect and secure university data and what to do in case of theft, loss or data breach.
- Privacy and Monitoring
- Another section was added to define circumstances when the university has the right to examine IT resources. It also advises users not to use university-owned devices for personal business or personally owned devices for university business.
- Email
- This section clarifies that university business should only be conducted using university-provided email accounts, not personal ones.
