The new Hangouts Chat is now available for NC State G Suite users. Chat is Google’s newest communication and collaboration tool and is slated to replace Classic Hangouts text-based messaging in the future.
The new Chat brings up-to-date technology to web-based communications including:
- Chat Rooms
- Conversation Threads
- Google File Sharing
- Meet video calls
- Message enhancements (Reactions, Bots and editing)
Chat’s content is retained by Google Vault, NC State’s eDiscovery tool, and is set to expire after 18 months for all Chat Rooms and direct messages when “History is on.”
As a reminder, Chat should not be used for:
- Personnel topics
- Sensitive data
- Conversations that need to be archived or maintained longer than 18 months
- Meeting minutes
- Process documentation
