Email Retention

Executive Summary

This report is in response to the need to review, update and establish email retention guidelines for the “NC State Campus Community 2006”. The E-Mail Records Review Panel appointed by North Carolina’s Governor has produced recommendations including the Governor’s Executive Order No. 150, Email Retention and Archiving (3 pages). Changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure require discovery and preservation of electronically stored evidence, including email, which impacts the techniques used for storage, archival and retrieval of email as evidence. Implementation of centrally-supported calendaring and email system for staff and faculty provides an opportunity to find cost-effective ways to support these guidelines.
