01: University issues new regulation for Payment Card Merchant Services
Effective March 1, 2011, the university has issued a new regulation for Payment Card Merchant Services that outlines procedures for campus entities to obtain and manage merchant accounts and to ensure compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS).

Payment cards including credit, debit, prepaid, stored value, gift and chip cards are widely used at the university as compensation for many goods and services.

The North Carolina Office of the State Controller (OSC) is statutorily charged with administering the State’s Electronic Commerce and Payments Program (SECP), which includes merchant payment card services. All university payment card processing will use a merchant account associated with the OSC SECP Master Service Agreement (MSA), unless specific written exemption is given by the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Business and the Vice Chancellor for Information Technology.

All campus entities that accept payment cards must comply with the PCI DSS program as indicated in the regulation. Failure to meet all requirements outlined in the new Payment Card Merchant Services Regulation will result in the suspension of physical and/or electronic payment capability for participating campus entities. Additionally, the affected payment card company may impose fines, ranging from $50,000 to a maximum of $500,000 for each violation. Any fines or costs incurred by the university, as a result of PCI DSS non-compliance, will be charged to the responsible campus entity.

Payment card use at the university will be administered and controlled jointly by the University Controller’s Office and the Office of Information Technology Security and Compliance unit. Details regarding this administration can be found on the University Controller’s Office Web site.

For more information, see the Payment Card Merchant Services Regulation Web page.

02: Cisco Unity Connection requires new campus voice mail box setup

To prepare for the April 14 deployment of Cisco Unity Connection, the new campus voice mail system, campus voice mail users will need to set up a new voice mail box.

Cisco Unity Connection will consolidate the voice mail systems of Main Campus and the College of Veterinary Medicine into one highly-resilient, feature-rich system. In addition to the traditional telephone interface, the new voice mail system will offer campus voice mail users Unified Messaging, or the ability to access their voice mail via an e-mail client. Cisco Unity Connection replaces the aging campus Octel voice mail system.

Later this month, OIT Communication Technologies (ComTech) will send campus voice mail users detailed instructions for setting up their new voice mail box using their Unity ID and password on the new voice mail system’s Web interface. Campus users should set up their voice mail box during the time period that has been designated for them to ensure a smooth transition to the new system and to avoid interruption of their voice mail service.

After the initial setup and system cutover, all campus voice mail users will be able to access their voice mail messages via the traditional telephone interface by calling 512-MAIL(6245).

Campus voice mail users will be able to access messages stored on the Octel voice mail system for 30 days after the new system is activated. Afterwards, on Monday, May 16, the Octel voice mail system will be decommissioned, and all messages will be deleted. Campus voice mail users will receive detailed information on how to access the Octel voice mail system to listen to remaining messages, which cannot be forwarded to the new system.

For additional information, please contact the ComTech Unified Communications Team at 515-2200.

04: SAS and JMP statistical software available
OIT Software Licensing Management announces that 2011 SAS licenses are available for SAS 8.2, SAS 9.2, SAS 9.1.3, JMP 8 and JMP 9. You can view software download instructions on the Software Licensing website. These licenses have an expiration date of Dec. 31. If you have any questions or problems, please contact SAS_help@ncsu.edu.

05: OIT to renew Adobe Contractual Licensing Program

OIT Software Licensing Management is in the process of renewing the Adobe Contractual Licensing Program (CLP), which allows faculty and staff to purchase Adobe products at reduced prices from Adobe resellers.

As part of the program, you may have also purchased the Adobe Upgrade Plan, which provides access to upgrades to your Adobe product for the life of the plan. The maintenance plan will expire on May 31; however, you will have a 90-day grace period, or until Aug. 31, to renew the maintenance plan for your Adobe product.

06: Moodle course list to get shorter for students
On March 24, Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications (DELTA) will make changes to the availability of student courses offered via the Moodle learning management system.

Currently, the default setting in Moodle leaves all courses available to students, even after the semester is finished. As a result, the listing of available courses keeps growing. To make active courses easier to find for both instructors and students, courses offered prior to spring 2011 will be made unavailable to students and guests, unless instructors request that they be kept available.

These courses will still be available to teachers, designers and teaching assistants, but they will appear in gray below active courses in Moodle. For more information, including some common questions and answers, visit DELTAwire. You may also contact LearnTech via e-mail at learntech@ncsu.edu or by telephone at 513-7094 if you have questions.

OIT’s Brown Bag Lunch and Learn series will present the following upcoming workshops:

  • “New Voice Mail for Campus” will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16 in 216 Scott Hall. On April 14, the aging campus Octel voice mail system will be replaced by Cisco Unity Connection. Trish Palmer of OIT ComTech will provide a brief outline of how the new voice mail system will be deployed to campus and a demo of its telephone and Web-based interfaces.Palmer will close with a brief discussion of how this project relates to ComTech’s Internet Protocol (IP) telephony project, which will replace the campus AT&T digital line infrastructure with a Cisco Voice over IP (VoIP) infrastructure. The IP telephony project is slated to begin after the completion of the voice mail system conversion. To register for this workshop, visit Classmate.
  • “Jing and Dropbox” will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30 in 216 Scott Hall. Twanda Baker of OIT Design, Education and Outreach will highlight the most useful and popular features of these two free Web utilities in one workshop session. If you find that it’s sometimes better to show than tell, then Jing may be the solution for you. With Jing, you can capture an image or a video of anything you see on your computer screen and then store and share it online.

And wouldn’t it be nice to save your documents and pictures in a folder on your home computer and then have access to that same folder on your work computer? Perhaps you would also appreciate having this folder and its contents accessible via your smartphone or tablet. Dropbox provides you with an easy way to store, sync and share files online.

To learn more about these free Web utilities and to register for this workshop, visit Classmate.

  • New Date: The “James B. Hunt Jr. Library” presentation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27 in 216 Scott Hall.
