Unity Macintosh Lab Software for Spring 2012 – 12132011

Spring  2012 – 12132011

See http://oit.ncsu.edu/macintosh/views/labkit-all for information on software in previous kits.

MAJOR CHANGES:

1) Supports only Core2Duo or newer Intel Hardware.
Should work on all current Intel Apple hardware that can boot to 10.7.2.

2) Casper Installation Methods  OIT is using the Casper Suite 8.3.1 to deploy all Unity Lab Machines by installing software instead of imaging it on with ASR.  As such there is no image to download.  This sofware set and Casper workflows are not machine specifice and should work on all current Intel Apple hardware that can boot to 10.7.2.

3) Tokens to use OpenAFS are no longer acquired at login.  Instead the use the /System/Library/CoreServices/Ticket Viewer.app to login with username of form UnityID@EOS.NCSU.EDU and then run the /Applications/MyAFS.app to obtain tokens to use AFS file space. MyAFS.app gets Service Granting Tickets and Tokens for using NC State AFS Cells (unity, eos, bp). Because of NC State’s dual realm configuration with WOLFTECH AD, it is critical that the edu.mit.kerbeos file in /Library/Preferences be correct to function. A good copy of the correct edu.mit.kerberos file can be downloaded from: http://www.ncsu.edu/mac/downloads/edu.mit.Kerberos.zip  Also there is a new MyAFS.app that can be used to renew tokens after kerberos tickets are obtained at: http://www.ncsu.edu/mac/downloads/myafs.zip .  Casper Suite administrators can clone the policy “OIT-aaLabBasics at startup sp2012” to use post-imaging and get the correct configuration and AFS install in the correct order to work with Active Directory login authentication.  Note that the casper policy installs OpenAFS for 10.7 only.

4) The printers will need to be set to require name an password in their options.  Use the following command:

sudo lpadmin -p -o auth-info-required=username,password

See the http://oit.ncsu.edu/macintosh/cups-setup-wolfcopy-mac-os-x-105+ for more details.

OIT is providing a Universal Lab Software only for  Intel (i386) based Macintosh hardware supporting 32 bit and 64 bit machines where possible.

OIT Unity Macintosh Lab kits create local home directories (ie /Users/)for each user that logs in on each machine.  Use the MyAFS link to save files to traditional Unity AFS file space.  This means that user preferences and Library files will not follow the users from one machine to the next.

Known Issues:

 1) Mac OS X 10.7.x will not run on PPC and some Core Solo hardware.  All kits support only Apple, Intel based hardware with Core2Duo or better!

2) When printing a Unity ID and password will be required each time a print request is made to a WolfCopy printer. Printing now uses the Apple supported CUPS mechanisms instead of LPRNG used in the past. Have a look at:

http://oit.ncsu.edu/macintosh/cups-setup-wolfcopy-mac-os-x-105 to see how to setup printers.

3) Fetch License does not apply correctly.  The com.fetchsoftworks.plist is not updated correctly for the NCSU License in /System/Library/Use Templates/English.lproject/Library/Preferences.  Copy a valid file from a working machine to this location and to /Users/*/Library/Preferences or use the OIT- Fetch License Fix policy in Casper.

4) Adobe InDesign 5.5  and AfterEffects 5.5 may give inproperly installed error on launch.  The Casper install priority for the InDesign 5.5 and AfterEffects 5.5 was set to 9 making them install before Adobe Web Premium Suite and creating Adobe Registry conflicts.  The installers in Casper have been set to priority 11 to install after Web Premium eliminating the issues.  Fix by reinstalling Web Premium Suite followed by InDesign and AfterEffects.

5) SPSS install will not apply NC State License.  The SPSS product will not correclty snap shot for unattended install.  A special silent installer is needed.  Details are at http://blog.macadmincorner.com/silent-install-of-ibm-spss-statistics-19-for-mac/.  The SPSS Statistics License Authorization Wizard in /Applications/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/19/ can be run manually to enter the license code available from OIT Security and Compliance.   A better solution is to use the command line java tools to validate the license.

cd /Applications/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/19/SPSSStatistics.app/Contents/bin/
java -jar licenseactivator.jar CONSOLEMODE codes= proxyport=80 proxyhost=lm.spss.com

These two commands will license SPSS  given the correct license number and should be run after the install runs. A Casper Policy named OIT-Fix SPSS 19 License Script    is available that allows passing of the license number in parameter 4 and must run while someone is logged in so set the policy as a login policy to execute once per computer.
