OIT to migrate NCSU Drive to new network storage system

OIT is planning to change the hardware that supports the NCSU Drive, which is used for storage of home and shared drives for many campus departments. Home drives are often mapped to B:\ or H:\ drives, and departmental shared drives are often mapped to S:\ drives.

The departmental shared drives (S:\ drives) for OIT Managed Desktop users will be migrated to the new hardware beginning Thursday, Nov. 28 to Sunday, Dec. 1.

The migration of the remainder of the NCSU Drive service will take place at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020 and is expected to be completed by 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 5.

For most campus users, these migrations will be seamless and unnoticed. For some users who have hard-coded drive mappings, attempts to reach these drives will fail. The new home drive path for all users will be \\ncsudrive.ncsu.edu\home. However, if you map to the home or departmental drives prior to Jan. 4, the data will be overwritten when the last synchronization takes place.

The current drive path, \\unityid.file.ncsu.edu\ncsu\unityid\, will stop working late Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020.

Both migrations will enable OIT to:

  • Retire old storage arrays currently supporting the NCSU drive.
  • Improve storage access performance.
  • Simplify account creation processes.
  • Reduce ongoing maintenance costs.
