ITECS to retire Velocity file transfer service on May 24

After a decade in use, Information Technology and Engineering Computer Services (ITECS) will discontinue the Velocity file transfer service on Friday, May 24.

The decision was made due to Velocity’s use patterns and the availability of more advanced file storage solutions. Developed in 2008 as a campus solution to transfer large files, the service has shifted in use to long-term file storage. As of January, there are 11,963 stored Velocity files with an average file size of 200MB.

Many storage providers today offer cloud-based, affordable and reliable long-term storage for small and large files, alike. ITECS has decided to retire the Velocity service in favor of these storage providers.

Transferring Your Velocity Files
While you can still use the service until May 24, you should take steps now to move your stored files to an alternative storage solution.

As a NC State G Suite user, you have unlimited storage capabilities with Drive and can use the service as an acceptable replacement for transferring and storing files. Use Google File Stream to transfer files 500MB or larger.
